India is a huge country, and with an integration of several different cultures, beliefs and traditions, it is undoubtedly the food which gets the most benefits! The intensive cuisines that are delicious, exotic and can offer a lot of variety to both vegetarian and meat lovers alike. Though its rather impossible to pick a handful of best foods in India, here’s a humble list of the “Top 10 foods to try in India,” whether you are visiting or spending so time in India, they are a must try.

1. Ladoo

In India, every special and auspicious work or event is started by having something sweet and nothing works better than a Motichoor-Ladoo. So lets start our flavorsome journey with a sweet dip. Chickpea flour globules fried in ghee (clarified butter) and then soaked in sugar syrup, are a definite in every wedding, festival, birth of a baby, house-warming or a simple get together!

2. Butter Chicken and Naan

A Punjabi classic, Butter Chicken and Naan (soft bread cooked in clay oven and loaded with butter), are a must have when you are in India. The finger-licking chicken is marinated with masalas (spices) and yogurt and then cooked in a heavenly mixture of butter, tomato puree and cream. Eat with your bare hands and experience foodgasm like no other.

3. Rogan Josh

This is a signature dish from the Northern part of India, Kashmir; that consist of pieces of lamb or mutton braised with a rich gravy with aromatic spices including lots of red chilies. A Mughlai dish (from the Mughals), Rogan Josh is a staple of the Kashmiri Cuisine.

4. Galouti Kebab

Though kebabs, grilled meat dishes, are now pretty well known all over the world, the Galouti Kebabs, from Lucknow are a must have. The Kebab that just melts in your mouth, is said to be made using about a hundred different spices.

5. Biryani

Another regal dish, where Basmati Rice is cooked at very slow fire with variations of lamb, mutton, seafood and can also be made as a vegetarian casserole. The beauty lies in the fact that you have a huge variety to choose from, Lucknow Biryani, Hyderabadi Biryani, Mughlai Biryani, each have a unique flavour and way of cooking, and is as good as the other.

6. Idli Dosa

A typical of the Southern Indian diet especially breakfast, both idli and dosa are immensely popular throughout the country. Dosa, a fermented crepe made of rice batter is filled with potatoes, and idli a steamed rice cake, are enjoyed with hot Sambhar and coconut chutney.

7. Tandoori Chicken

Though available almost everywhere in India, but if you haven’t eaten the typical Tandoori Chicken of Punjab, you are missing out in life! A go-to dish for most parties, the juicy chicken, with loads of dry-masalas, straight out of the tandoor (clay-oven) just melts in your mouth when you sink your teeth in it!

8. Chole Bhatoora

A mouthwatering North Indian breakfast enjoyed most in Winters, takes most people by storm by its unique combination of chana masala (spicy chickpeas) and bhatoora (fried bread made of refined flour). Every bite will make you want more.

9. Shahi Paneer

Shahi means royal and Paneer means cottage cheese, Shahi Paneer is just another rich and creamy treat for the vegetarians. A preparation of paneer, in a thick gravy made up of cream, aromatic spices, is enjoyed most with Naan or tandoori roti and is indeed a mainstay dish.

10. Rajma Chawal

Try this either at a fancy restaurant or a road-side Dhaba, you will be in for a treat. A delectable thick curry of red kidney beans along with boiled Basmati rice is predominant in the country. Word of advice: Don’t miss the onion rings, sprinkled with a pinch of salt and a few drops of lemon juice!

When it comes to Food, India is a proud country! Despite the diversity in language, rituals, clothing and ideas, mostly all Indians have one thing in common! We all love to eat, and eat together! And the ultimate happiness and contentment for all Indian Mothers comes from seeing their Children eat!!
